About SCAR
The South County Animal Rescue (SCAR) was founded in January 2016. To date, SCAR has rescued over 2,000 animals that would have been given away, surrendered or abandoned in rural South Monterey County. We also help our shelter partners by taking in shelter animals when a foster is available. We are entirely volunteer operated and work function in a foster based system. SCAR is proud to serve our South County community and save the lives of innocent animals.

Our Mission
South County Animal Rescue was established to provide rescue and assistance for domestic animals. Our goal is to reduce the homeless population of domestic animals in South County. Our strategies include increasing access to low-cost spay and neuter services, trap-neuter-return, safe rescue, compassion-driven canine training, and adoption placement. We strongly believe in the empowerment that comes from increasing community awareness and education about pet health and responsible pet ownership.

Our Beginning
SCAR was founded by Soledad resident Lucy Mason Jensen, who recognized the need for a South County-based rescue dedicated to saving animals in the rural region. Lucy brought together a group of passionate animal lovers who shared her commitment to SCAR’s mission. Among them is Carla Strobridge, who became President of the Board of Directors and remains an active part of the SCAR team, even after relocating out of the area.

Lucy was recently crowned as Queen of SCAR, celebrating her legacy and recognizing her ongoing contributions and dedication to SCAR. We continue to value and benefit from the wisdom and guidance that Queen Lucy so generously shares with our team.
